I’m delighted to introduce you to another of our Graduates, Jules Buchanan. Jules completed our Funeral Celebrant training in January 2024 and returned in June to complete the Wedding and Vow Renewals training. I loved Jules’ approach. She’s value driven and will be an amazing support to everyone she works with. Her connection to the sea, and love of the outdoors will be a big part in the ceremonies she creates.
What made you decide to become an Independent Celebrant?
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
It sounds a bit improbable but I started thinking about becoming a celebrant initially when I read a novel (I think it was Again, Rachel by Marian Keyes) where a character talked about it. The idea was like a little seed that was planted…I kept thinking, ooh, how interesting, and hmm, I could do that…the idea of becoming a celebrant just grew and grew until I couldn’t put it off anymore, so I started to do some research about how to kick things off…
I knew I wasn’t interested in becoming a humanist celebrant, as, although I’m not religious, I didn’t want to preclude people from using religious elements that are special to them, within their ceremony, so I knew that training to be an independent celebrant was the right path for me.
What skills do you think you bring to the role?
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
As well as a being a celebrant I’m also a yoga teacher so I’m used to helping people to relax and find a sense of calm. I’m also keen on finding meaningful readings and poems to finish my classes with every week and I love it when these resonate with what people are experiencing, as they often do. My previous career in logistics as a sales director means I’m also used to writing proposals as well as presenting and public speaking. I have also been a Samaritans volunteer in the past and so, after having received their training some years ago, I believe I’m a good listener too. My values are authenticity, professionalism, fun, warmth and positivity.
You have taken both our Wedding and Funeral Celebrant training. Can you share one thing from each course that really stood out or hit home for you?
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
From the funeral training, I was most surprised to understand how little time is allocated, especially at crematoria. I’ve been to funerals of course but I didn’t really consider how long each ceremony was – just 20 minutes – it’s such a short and limited time for a goodbye so getting things right to allow for a life celebration within those parameters is critical.
With the wedding celebrant training, I didn’t realise how creative ceremonies could be. That I can help couples to really design a unique ceremony that is written specifically for them, allowing them to have their wedding exactly the way they want it to be. Like many people, I was married by a registrar with a cut and paste template nearly 20 years ago – I didn’t know there was an alternative at the time.
You’ve only recently completed your training. How are you planning to promote your new venture? (one or two ideas would be great)
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
I’m going to tell everyone I know! I’m letting people in my yoga business, my friends, family and community know that I’m now an independent celebrant (and also what one is…). If I keep reminding people, it’ll stick and they’ll recommend me to their contacts if they hear of anyone looking for a celebrant…as with promoting my yoga classes, I think word of mouth and personal recommendations will be very important.

What are you most looking forward to as a Wedding Celebrant?
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
I think being a small part of someone’s big day…by taking some of the pressure off the couple so that they can feel relaxed and just be themselves and enjoy it their wedding!
What type of ceremony would you love to create – if there were no limits on time or budget?
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
I’d love to create a vow renewal ceremony for a more mature couple, who are quite relaxed and laid back – they know who they are and are keen to share their commitment with family and friends. It’d be somewhere on the northumberland coast…by the sea of course! Actually, while we’re at it, nevermind time or budget constraints…can we guarantee some amazing weather too please?
The ceremony would have a good dose of humour but would also be romantic. A ceremony truly for the couple – not for the audience. One that’s solely based on what they want and not what they think is expected or what a ceremony “should” be like or what “usually” happens. One where we can make it really personal and funny to those that know them – light-hearted in tone but with a real sense of love and joyfulness.
What top tip would you give to anyone exploring the idea of training as an Independent Celebrant?
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
I would say have a think about it…consider whether being an independent celebrant is a role you can see yourself doing? Maybe consult a close friend or family member to ask their advice. People often see themselves differently from how other people see them so talking it over with someone you respect can be helpful. Once you’ve decided it’s an avenue you’d like to pursue, do your research and consider your options so that you select the right choice of training that works for you.
Similar to yoga teacher training, once you’ve decided you’d like to train as an independent celebrant, there’s a lot of choice for training out there and it can be a bit confusing with different associations and professional bodies offering different courses, so have a look around and don’t be afraid to engage with the trainers and ask questions.

Tell us five things about yourself – Jules the person, rather than the Celebrant.
Jules Buchanan Celebrant:
Well, I’ve already shared my values, that I’m also a yoga teacher and that I’ve been married for nearly 20 years (17 to be exact – I’m married to James who’s Scottish and loves cycling and whisky – not together!)
Of course there’s more…
I love walking our black Labrador, Diesel, on the beach which is 2 minutes walk from my house every morning. Whatever the weather, the beach changes every day and that time out in the elements gives me space to breathe and be grateful.
As well as yoga, I like a 10km run and try to swim in the sea regularly, although I’m not a cold water dipper – I wear a thermal wetsuit, neoprene hat, gloves and boots…the works!
I’m a vegetarian too (and have been for over 20 years) and a I’m a massive fan of brunches and brownies. I love scoping out a good brunch place that also does perfect (squishy) brownies that I can takeaway for later to have with a cup of masala chai tea (with oat milk)…
