I was most surprised to understand how little time is allocated, especially at crematoria. I’ve been to funerals of course but I didn’t really consider how long each ceremony was – just 20 minutes – it’s such a short and limited time for a goodbye so getting things right to allow for a life celebration within those parameters is critical.
With the wedding celebrant training, I didn’t realise how creative ceremonies could be. That I can help couples to really design a unique ceremony that is written specifically for them, allowing them to have their wedding exactly the way they want it to be. Like many people, I was married by a registrar with a cut and paste template nearly 20 years ago – I didn’t know there was an alternative at the time.

There is an alarming amount of misinformation in the media and a lot of anti-trans statements coming from the government, so the best thing you can do is increase your confidence about the laws that currently exist, and stand your ground if you’re challenged. If there’s one piece of information I’d love everyone to take away from this interview it’s that a trans person doesn’t need a Gender Recognition Certificate to have their identity affirmed when their death is registered.
