I was most surprised to understand how little time is allocated, especially at crematoria. I’ve been to funerals of course but I didn’t really consider how long each ceremony was – just 20 minutes – it’s such a short and limited time for a goodbye so getting things right to allow for a life celebration within those parameters is critical.
With the wedding celebrant training, I didn’t realise how creative ceremonies could be. That I can help couples to really design a unique ceremony that is written specifically for them, allowing them to have their wedding exactly the way they want it to be. Like many people, I was married by a registrar with a cut and paste template nearly 20 years ago – I didn’t know there was an alternative at the time.

It was after attending the funerals of each loved-one, two of the funerals were just four weeks apart, and listening to the services which were delivered by Celebrants. I was left with a feeling that I did not understand. I wanted to be that person officiating the service. It felt like a calling, something connected within me so strongly and at the time I did not even know these people were Celebrants, and you could train to be one.
